“There’s no place like home”. Is the tagline you’ll hear in Oz, The Oswald State Correctional Facility, formerly known as Oswald State Penitentiary, a level 4 (maximum-security) prison in the state of New York.
The TV show is constructed in a series of stories narrated by Augustus Hill, an inmate himself of the “Emerald City”, the experimental unit of the prison. Because of his condition which ties him to a wheelchair he takes the role of a neutral character, who has access to all sorts of stories and events that happen inside the unit.
Managed by Tim McManus, the unit is supposed to act as a rehabilitation program, more than the pure use of violence and punishment, which makes the place a highly controlled and strict enterprise. Produced by HBO, this TV show, even if centered on a fictional prison, makes the drama, the struggle and the fights for power between factions and individuals and the mere survival seem as real as they can get in the odd and erratic day to day life of such an environment.
