Ah, the life of a university student…. Sure, it involves a lot of mature decisions and responsibilities but… who are we kidding? When you move from home to continue your studies, you tend to be anything but responsible and your decisions are not always the wisest ones.
And in truth, this is what this award-winning TV series is about. It follows the events in the lives of a group of students. Mostly freshers in the Manchester Medlock University after they move together into a house off-campus. They mostly ended up together in Rusholme rather than the campus of the university because of their late applications.
Who are they? Let’s start with Violet “Vod” Nordstrom, played by Zawe Ashton. She seems strong and imposing but in truth she’s hiding a lot of insecurities under that tough attitude. Very stylish in a faux gothic attire, she studies literature and she’s the soul of any party, being capable to drink most men under the table. Melissa “Oregon” Shawcross (Charlotte Ritchie) is also studying literature. She comes from a privileged family and that is at times the reason why she is pretending to be someone different; she is scared that she won’t be accepted by people because of her background. Then we have Howard Mcgregor (Greg McHugh)…he’s the only inhabitant of the house who is not a fresh student.
He is now studying geology before a year in Philosophy which didn’t end well. He’s very eccentric and strangely mannered although socially-challenged, hence the rest of the group try their best to keep him at a decent distance. “Josie” Jones (Kimberley Nixon) is a sweet but indecisive girl. She’s now studying pharmacology after trying dentistry and zoology. She may be cute and shy but she has an incredibly short-temper, usually exposed through her arguments with Kingsley. Kingsley (Joe Thomas) and Josie share a heavy and tensioned relationship. He is charming and easy to talk to but has his insecurities. Last but not least, to complete the group comes “J.P.” Pembersley (Jack Whitehall). Like Oregon he comes from a privileged background. But he is nothing like her; he’s cocky, arrogant and very fond of his posh accent.
How can such different personalities get together? Well…first of all they don’t have a choice. There might be misunderstandings and awkward situations, but you can find a family where you least expected.
