Based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth and set in the East End of London in the 1950s, BBC’s absorbing and inspiring medical drama follows Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine, Garrow’s Law, Doctor Who) as she begins work as a midwife in the deprived Poplar district. At Nonnatus House, a nursing convent, part of an Anglican religious order, the young woman, who enjoyed a privileged upbringing in the home counties, enters a whole new world. Although she is initially shocked by the conditions in which her patients live, Jenny comes to get the feel of the material limitations and to love the people who must live there. She moved to London to avoid the lure of a forbidden love to a married man. Her best friend, James “Jimmy” Wilson (George Rainsford, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Law & Order: UK), stands by her and makes her feel at ease. More by token, he is secretly in love with the nymphy.

Charismatic and good-hearted, Jenny befriends her fellow colleagues and patients and always tries to help those in need. Among them rank Nurse Camilla “Chummy” Cholmeley-Browne (Miranda Hart, Not Going Out, Miranda), a clumsy, eternally good-humoured, kind and shy young woman, who was born into a prominent family, Nurse Beatrix “Trixie” Franklin (Helen George, Hotel Babylon, Doctors), a bright, bubbly, dazzling girl, who loves jazz and dancing, Nurse Cynthia Miller (Bryony Hannah, Above Suspicion: Silent Scream, Dead Boss), a caring, intelligent and sensitive young woman, who becomes Jenny’s confidante and lifelong friend, Nurse Patsy Mount (Emerald Fennel, Any Human Heart, Chickens), a tall and elegant girl, who never blinks in the face of hard work or physical privation, Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter, New Tricks, Agatha Christie’s Poirot), the sister-in-charge and most experienced midwife at Nonnatus House, Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt, ER, Heartbeat), one of the first women in Britain to qualify as a midwife, Sister Evangelina (Pam Ferris, Rosemary & Thyme, Gavin & Stacey), the only one of the sisters who comes from the same tough environment as the community they serve, Sister Bernadette (Laura Main, Monarch of the Glen, Murder City), the most educated of the nuns, Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates, Lip Service, Holby City), warm-hearted, slightly innocent young woman, who lived most of her life in the countryside, Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi, Bedtime, Hustle) the handyman at Nonnatus House, and Dr. Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann, Streetwise, Emmerdale), the local physician, who works closely with the midwives.
