A cat-and-mouse kind of drama, Billions is worth both your time and your money. Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti play the roles of Bobby “Axe” Axelrod and Charles “Chuck” Rhoades respectively. Who is the cat is the big question… An ambitious, charismatic hedge fund emperor who came from humble beginnings, Bobby “Axe” Axelrod holds the reins of the insanely prosperous Axe Capital. He rules with a heavy hand using insider trading and bribery to grow his firm’s enormous wealth. However, the manager lavishly rewards his employees’ loyalty. Axelrod covers his tracks with heroic philanthropy, specializing in taking care of 9/11 families who lost loved ones. On that day, Axe Capital itself was housed in one of the Twin Towers. Absolutely ruthless when required to be, Axelrod is also a faithful husband to Lara (Malin Akerman) and a doting dad with their two young sons.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Charles “Chuck” Rhoades Jr. is ruthless and has a particular distaste for rich criminals who do whatever it takes to go unpunished. Despite his significant power as U.S. Attorney, Rhoades struggles not to be overshadowed both by his wealthier wife, Wendy (Maggie Siff), and by his well-connected and very rich father (Jeffrey DeMunn). The go-between in all of this is no other than Wendy, who served as Axe Capital’s invaluable and very well-compensated in-house therapist long before her husband became a high-level federal prosecutor. She’s still very much in that capacity and has a strong relationship with Axelrod, her boss, for whom she has been working for more than 15 years. This presents a glaring conflict of interest when Chuck Rhoades makes it his mission to take Axelrod down with help from his meddling but ring-wise father.
